Media and the public’s right to know

Where does this end? Why are people so obsessed with stories about people they don’t know? Why do we care about Charlie Sheen, Britney Spears, Mel Gibson? I don’t really understand it. I’ve never really cared enough about what is happening in any celebrity’s life to follow what the media horde is after. I’ve heard about the Sheen story, but only because it’s mentioned on the radio and TV. I have not gone to any websites to view what he has said or done or watched any videos. So celebrities sort of accept it and embrace it. It’s a double edged sword. They don’t like the media, but they need the media. Both sides often deserve each other.

But what about people who are not celebrities? Does the media have a right to invade their privacy, stake out their homes and generally harass them? Do people have a right to harass others? For what reasons? We are heading down a troubling path from which I don’t think there is any return. We have a segment of our society who takes joy in the downfall of others as if that somehow elevates them. Little do they realize that it doesn’t.
